Council Race Analysis

Howard Wilkinson reports on why the council has four new members. He focuses on why Thomas won (conservatives via POWR PAC), and why Malone and Smitherman lost (Eastside said no). What was missing is why Damon Lynch lost. I would say he lost because he took for granted his base was big enough for him to win and would come out and vote for him. He did little to change his image, other than appearing at council forums everywhere. If you have an image as someone who led a boycott to hurt the city, you can't change that image unless you come out and say you were wrong, or at least put it past you. He didn't do that on a wide scale, if at all. He may have given private assurances to the party to gain endorsement, but that does not get you votes.

  1. There were several things working against Lynch this year. I agree that I think he thought that his base would have taken him to victory. 2003 results fooled him.

But also, there were a lot more candidates with war chests and organized support behind their candidacy this year than in 2003.

His campaign was invisible other than the forums, especially during the critical final months.

I disagree that he should have said that he was wrong about it, but he should have done a better job of putting the boycott and his image into perspective, because the boycott was not something that he could get away from.

  2. Agreed. Lynch just did not have the money or staff to get it done. He has no reason to apologize for being one of the organizers of the boycott.

Apologies should be demanded from the police department for some of the mistakes they have made that have cost people their lives.

Not one apology to the Owensby family for the lost life of their son at the hands of CPD and since when did traffic warrants cost people their lives. And then you have Fangman who then makes inflammatory statements about the vitims and their families.

I applaud Damon Lynch, III for the organizing of the boycott, which actually aided in stopping the riots.

  3. Councilman Smitherman fell victim to people who want their political truths gift wrapped, and to those who chose to turn a blind eye to the fact that not all police officers are good officers.

There are bad apples in every bunch, it just so happens the bad apples in this bunch cost taxpayers 4.5 million dollars.

Thank you Councilman Smitherman for be a good, honest standup councilman.

Thank you for being a voice for all citizens in Cincinnati.
